Let the games begin

February 13, 2010

This was my favourite item from the HBC Canada Olympic collection, but I can't find it anywhere!

As one commentator said on Canadian network CTV during the coverage of the Opening Ceremonies at the the Vancouver 2010 Olympics yesterday:

“At a certain point you just have to suspend logic…”

And as far as I am concerned, that extends beyond just the Opening Ceremonies (which had some cool & endearing, as well as entirely hokey & awkward moments, all to balance out and be pretty ok overall) to the entire games.

Yes, I will watch the games. Admire the speed and skill of athletes who have trained for years. Being a couch coach, lamenting their poor technique in executing a triple sow cow, or crossing skis as they jump in to the ski. Cheering like they were my own fam, playin for gold, in an unreasonable bout of patriotism.

But I will have to suspend logic on the billions of dollars spent on the whole endeavor, billions that people of Canada will be paying for years to come– no matter how much tourism they bring in.
I will have to suspend logic on how though the First Nations were “honoured” in a 5 mins tribute at the opening ceremonies, yet it was indigenous land that was extracted and built upon without the support of that community in many cases.

For Canada gear, I am going to stick with Roots. At least I can be certain it is actually Made in Canada!

When the commentators talk about the beauty of Vancouver, I will have to suspend the reality that so many were displaced and left homeless as the city was “cleaned up”. I will have to suspend logic that in a place where charter rights and civil liberties are foundational, people who have shown their unhappiness with the wastefulness of the Olympics are being intimidated and treated as criminals.

So back to it– the Olympic bubble. Athlete’s in the various permutations of ski jackets, snowpants & lodge-wear.

I will suspend logic, that those items can actually be stylish. 😉
