Out of this world

Further confirmation that the Japanese know how to travel in style: Before blasting off on a thirteen-day mission to the International Space Station on Monday, astronaut Naoko Yamazaki requested that Japanese designer Tae Ashida create a custom outfit for her journey. Ashida called the commission “a dream come true” and settled on a light-blue knit cardigan paired with navy-blue shorts. The design, she felt, conveys “a sense of grace … so that [Yamazaki] can feel at ease as she carries out a tough mission in a male-dominated, bleak atmosphere.” Our own hunt for the perfect cardigan continues.
